Chevrolet Brings Duramax Diesel to Work Truck Trim in Next-Generation 2027 Silverado 1500
The 2027 Silverado 1500 adds Duramax diesel availability to the Work Truck trim, introduces two new V-8 engines, and standardizes a 16.3-inch center display across all trims. Pricing and specifications are pending.

Chevrolet has introduced the next-generation 2027 Silverado 1500, the first significant overhaul of the nameplate since the current generation launched for model year 2019, according to the manufacturer’s announcement and a media background held on June 12.
The 2027 Silverado rides on an updated version of GM’s existing T1 architecture, making this more of a substantial evolution than a ground-up redesign, the last major one came in 2019.
For fleets, the most consequential news is that the 3.0L Duramax turbodiesel is now available in the Work Truck trim for the first time.
While Chevrolet has not yet released updated fuel economy numbers, Chevrolet CMO Steve Majoros noted in the Q&A that the current Duramax delivers better fuel economy than the Ford hybrid equivalent and offers more top-end torque, which should be attractive to fleets with high-mileage duty cycles.
A Uniform 10-Speed Transmission Across the Lineup
During the Q&A, Executive Chief Engineer Mark Dickens clarified that the 2027 TurboMax four-cylinder will move from an 8-speed to a 10-speed automatic transmission, which will be standard across all four powertrain options.
Dickens explained that the 10-speed pairing with the TurboMax's best-in-class standard torque rating should yield better drivability and efficiency, along with the reliability record the 10-speed has already accumulated across the broader Silverado lineup.
The transmission upgrade addresses one of the few areas where it lagged the V8 pairings.

Two New V8s Replace the 5.3L and 6.2L
The two all-new naturally aspirated V8 engines are a 5.7L (350 cubic inches) and a 6.6L (400 cubic inches). They replace the 5.3L and 6.2L V-8s that have anchored the current generation.
Chevrolet is claiming the most powerful naturally aspirated V-8 in the half-ton class, though specific horsepower, torque, towing, and payload ratings will be released closer to the on-sale date.
Which specific trims will be offered with each V8 has not yet been announced.
Two Screens Now Standard
On the technology side, every trim in the lineup — including Work Truck — now comes standard with a 16.3-inch center display and a 12.2-inch driver information center. In the current generation, larger screens have only been reserved for upper trims.
Safety and driver assistance features have been updated across the board, though Chevrolet has not yet detailed the specific additions.
Super Cruise, the hands-free driver assistance system with what Chevrolet describes as segment-exclusive trailering capability, continues in the lineup on select trims, with specific availability by trim to be announced.
Though this might not be for fleets, it’s groundbreaking for trucks: ZR2 and High Country add a front passenger-side 11.5-inch screen that Chevrolet says is a first for any production pickup truck.
That brings the total combined display on those trims to more than 60 diagonal inches, including a heads-up display and rear camera mirror.

Off-Road Updates to ZR2 and Bison Edition
The off-road 2027 ZR2 trim rides on 35-inch mud-terrain tires with a 2-inch lift, standard front- and rear-electronic locking differentials, and a suspension system pairing Multimatic DSSV dampers with newly added jounce dampers borrowed from Chevrolet's desert-racing program.
For the most demanding remote-site applications (like oil and gas fleets), the ZR2 Bison Edition — developed with American Expedition Vehicles — adds front and rear AEV bumpers, 18-inch bead-lock-capable wheels, and a skid plate suite covering the front underbody, transfer case, rear differential, and fuel tank. This underbody protection addresses a practical operational risk.
LT Trim Renamed Silverado
The trim formerly known as LT is being renamed simply "Silverado" for 2027 — a branding consolidation that Chevrolet's team acknowledged may have implications for residual value tracking and fleet remarketing.
Fleet managers should flag this with their FMCs, as the rename will need to be accounted for in valuation models.

The 2027 Silverado 1500's Multi-Flex center console features movable cup holders and a deployable armrest, adding nearly five liters of additional storage over the outgoing model.

What Isn't Changing
Across the lineup, Chevrolet confirmed that all three cab configurations — regular, double, and crew — carry over, as do bed sizes, unchanged from the current generation.
Confirmed during the Q&A: There are no current plans for a hybrid or PHEV powertrain in the 2027 Silverado 1500. No export power capability (comparable to the available Pro Power Onboard on the Ford F-150 hybrid) is planned for the ICE-powered 2027 Silverado.
It was also confirmed that the rear leaf spring suspension is retained.
Pricing and Availability
Chevrolet has confirmed the 2027 Silverado 1500 is expected to go on sale before the end of 2026, with production at GM's North American full-size truck assembly plants in Flint, Michigan, and Tonawanda, New York.
MSRP and fleet incentive structures have not been announced. Engine-to-trim availability across the seven-trim lineup will also be disclosed in subsequent announcements.
