In 2023, General Motors topped commercial fleet deliveries, saw an increase in vehicle deliveries, and led the industry in total sales across all segments, despite the ongoing supply chain crisis and a brief halt of some of its production plants amid a strike.

“GM has tremendous momentum. We grew our market share in 2023, maintaining strong pricing and low incentives. We led the industry in trucks and had great success with our affordable SUVs like the Chevrolet Trax and Buick Envista, some of today’s hottest-selling vehicles," GM North America Senior Vice President and President Marissa West said in a press statement.

Commercial Fleet Deliveries Boost Total Sales

Total GM Envolve sales were up 20% year-over-year, landing GM on top for commercial fleet deliveries for the second year in a row. Government sales were up 28%, the best for GM since 2012, according to the statement.

Commercial and government sales totals helped the automaker's total sales across all segments, with 2.6 million vehicles sold, a 14% increase year-over-year. GM also topped total vehicle sales.

A Look at General Motors EV Sales

GM increased total sales across six consecutive quarters, with total EV sales of 75,883 units — that's up 93%.

In its third-quarter earnings report, GM announced it would delay production of the Chevrolet Equinox, Silverado EV, and GMC Sierra Denali EV by a few months. It also announced it would delay starting up EV truck production at its Orion plant until late 2025.

This meant foregoing its short-term goal of building 400,000 EVs through mid-2024.

The automaker did still make headlines with its EVs. In the government vehicle space, GM made history with its Chevrolet Blazer EV being the first GM EV to earn the police pursuit certification — a first for any EV across the U.S.

In Michigan State Police's annual vehicle testing, the Blazer EV PPV topped the charts in vehicle dynamics testing over the Ford Mustang Mach-E, another popular EV choice for patrol vehicles.

Wrapping Up 2023

In Q4, GM Envolve's sales were down 31% — something the automaker said reflects the impact of the UAW strike on commercial deliveries — when compared to Q4 2022.

Still, in December 2023, data collected by Bobit revealed fleet sales for all automakers were up across all three segments:

  • Commercial: 4.1%

  • Government: 35.5%

  • Rental: 58.1%

Awards and Recognition

In its earnings report, GM noted that it won Automotive Fleet's 2023 Fleet Car and Truck of the Year Awards - with the Chevrolet Bolt EV being the first EV to win the top fleet car and the Chevrolet Silverado named the top truck for the fifth time.

GM was also the number one OEM in the J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study, which serves as the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality measured at 90 days of ownership.

Forecast: A Promising 2024

In 2024, GM forecasts a 16-million vehicle U.S. industry total.

"In 2024, we expect industry sales to remain strong and we’re excited about the opportunities ahead as we expand customer choice with new vehicles like the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ," West added.

Production of the Cadillac LYRIQ, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC HUMMER EV, and Chevrolet Blazer EV will be scaled.
