William “Skip” Halvorson

William “Skip” Halvorson, longtime owner of General Motors fleet dealership Prospect Motors, based out of Jackson, Calif., passed away on July 16. He was 86.

Prospect Motors spent a majority of its years as General Motors’ largest volume dealer during Halvorson’s 34 years as the owner of the dealership. During its peak, fleet sales for Halvorson’s dealership approached $3 billion annually. The dealership closed in 2008 due to the impacts of the Great Recession.

In 1943 Halvorson moved with his family to Stockton, Calif. After serving honorably in the Navy, he went to work for Chase Chevrolet as a “get ready boy” and later became a salesperson. He was promoted to General Sales Manager in 1969 and held that position until he purchased Prospect Motors in Jackson in 1974.

He is survived by his wife Lorraine, six children, 18 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
