Toyota Indiana on Aug. 2 celebrated the start of production of the first-ever Grand Highlander, an all-new three row SUV, the company announced Aug. 3. In 2021, the company designated an $803 million investment to produce two all-new SUV models.
First up is the 2024 Grand Highlander, with the MSRP starting at $43,070 and high-end features including:
Three zone auto climate control
Proactive driving assist
5000 lbs. towing capacity
Traffic jam assist
Digital rearview mirror with wider and clearer view
Panoramic view monitor
1500-watt power outlets
The Grand Highlander gas model is also equipped with a 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering more than 250 horsepower and more than 300 lb-ft. of torque and results in a combined MPG rating of 24.
The hybrid model sports the MAX engine, with an electric motor and a combined 36 mpg. This engine nets the performance at over 350 horsepower and 400 lb. ft of torque. Altogether, these engines allow for a smooth and fast drive when paired with the different driving modes which adjust the car’s driving dynamics.
The three different drive modes -- Sport, Normal, and Eco -- are more suited for pavement, focusing more on fuel efficiency and sharper acceleration. Whereas the Trail mode focuses more on slippage and regulating wheelspin to better accommodate multi-terrain driving.
The entertainment system of the SUV features a 12.3 in. Toyota audio multimedia touchscreen display that can be paired with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with the premium audio system by JBL that uses 11 subwoofer speakers spread throughout the interior of the car.
The safety features of the Highlander, such as the pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, and lane departure alert with steering assist, which allowed it to be a recipient of the 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick Award+, will be standard features on the 2024 as well.
