Subaru's 2020 Legacy will enter its seventh generation with more standard safety equipment on all models, an updated media system with greater connectivity, and an additional powertrain choice, Subaru announced at the Chicago Auto Show.
When it arrives at dealer lots in the fall, the Legacy midsize sedan, which competes against other intermediate sedans such as the Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima, will offer Subaru's EyeSight suite of safety technology as standard equipment even on all models. In addition to automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, the 2020 Legacy will also offer reverse automatic braking, which helps drivers avoid low-speed backing collisions.
A new DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System, which is optional on Limited and standard on XT trims, uses a dedicated camera and facial recognition software to identify signs of driver fatigue or driver distraction.
On the inside, the 2020 Legacy is adding a revamped Starlink infotainment system that displays on an 11.7-inch portrait tablet touchscreen. An available Wi-Fi hotspot makes the Legacy a more connected vehicle.
Subaru is reworking the Legacy's 2.5-liter Boxer engine, which is now rated to offer 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. XT models are powered by a new 260-horsepower 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine (277 lb.-ft.) that brings back a turbo four last seen on the 2012 Legacy.
As with all Subarus, all-wheel drive is standard. The Legacy is also moving to the Subaru Global Platform, which will provide improved driving dynamics, according to the company.
