More SUVs Nominated for Safety Awards
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded the Top Safety Pick+ to several SUVs, including three EVs, after rigorous safety tests across all brands.

The vehicles tested must earn good ratings on the updated side test, as well as the driver, passenger, and original overlap front tests. In addition, acceptable or good-rated standard headlights are mandatory for all trims.

From advanced ratings in vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention to superior performance in safety tests, several 2023 and 2024 SUVs, including electric, have earned the prestigious TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards.
The vehicles are tested and must earn good ratings on the updated side test, as well as the driver, passenger, and original overlap front tests. In addition, acceptable or good-rated standard headlights are mandatory for all trims. All vehicle must also attain good ratings in the front crash prevention system, for both the daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.
Three 2023 EVs earn TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards – Three electric vehicles, the Genesis Electrified GV70, Hyundai Ioniq 6, and the Lexus RZZ, all earned good ratings from the IIHS. The Electrified GV70, which is a midsize luxury SUV, has received advanced ratings in both daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention evaluations. The Hyundai Ioniq 6, a midsize car, and the Lexus RZ, a small SUV, have both earned superior ratings in these two tests.
Volkswagen Atlas and the Atlas Cross Sport – While previous models of the Atlas were recalled due to a possible steering hazard, the newest three and two-row SUV respectively achieved good ratings in their safety tests.
Two Mercedes-Benz SUVs capture top honors – Both the 2023-24 Mercedes-Benz GLC and 2024 GLE-Class were able to pass the safety tests due to the manufacturer adjusting the aim of the headlight systems after they changed their assembly processes earlier this year.
Kia Sportage picks up IIHS accolade – After updates to the side structure for the 2024 model, the small SUV was able to earn the Top Safety Pick+ award, achieving superior ratings in the daytime and advanced ratings in the nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.
