Ford introduced Ford Pro AI, an artificial intelligence-powered fleet assistant embedded in the Ford Pro Telematics platform, enabling fleet managers to analyze connected-vehicle data and quickly generate operational insights.

The feature debuted at NTEA Work Truck Week in Indianapolis and became available March 10 to Ford Pro Telematics software subscribers in the United States.

Ford said the system is designed to convert the millions of data points generated by connected commercial vehicles — from seatbelt usage to vehicle health signals — into insights fleet managers can act on quickly.

“Ford Pro AI is built to extend human capability, not replace it, by bringing responsible, fleet-specific intelligence to help solve real-world problems,” said Kevin Dunbar, general manager of Ford Pro Intelligence.

AI Designed for Fleet Operations

Ford Pro AI enables fleet managers to interact with fleet data via a conversational interface in the telematics dashboard. Managers can ask questions about vehicle health, operating costs, or driver behavior and receive recommendations based on real-time data.

During a March 3 media pre-briefing, Dunbar said the system is intended to help fleet managers deal with the growing complexity of modern fleet operations

“We build digital experiences that help our customers maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of their fleet operations,” Dunbar said, noting that the goal is to help fleets increase vehicle uptime, boost productivity, and reduce operating costs.

Ford Pro AI can identify vehicles that require maintenance based on telematics health data and help managers prioritize service to reduce downtime. The system can also guide users directly to the service scheduling feature in Ford Pro Telematics to book maintenance or repair appointments at one of Ford’s more than 760 Ford Pro Commercial Vehicle Centers.

Reducing Time Spent on Routine Tasks

Ford said the system was developed to address the administrative workload many fleet managers face.

According to Ford research cited by the company, fleet managers spend more than 23 hours per week on routine tasks such as scheduling maintenance, managing drivers, and tracking costs.

In surveys conducted by Ford, fleet managers estimated that artificial intelligence tools could reduce the time spent on daily tasks by about 40%.

Ford Pro AI can analyze operational factors such as fuel consumption, idle time, speeding events, and acceleration patterns across a fleet to identify inefficiencies and recommend actions to reduce operating costs.

For example, fleet managers overseeing delivery vehicles could ask the system to analyze rising fuel costs. The AI reviews utilization patterns and driver behavior to generate recommendations to reduce fuel expenses.

Ford said in a press release that early-access users reported that the system helped them quickly retrieve vehicle data summaries, allowing managers to respond to operational questions in minutes rather than spending significant time gathering information.

Built on Connected Vehicle Data

Ford Pro AI builds on the company’s connected-vehicle strategy, which began in 2019 when it installed embedded modems across its vehicle lineup.

That connectivity enables Ford Pro Intelligence, the company’s cloud-based platform, to collect and analyze vehicle data from sensors, components, dashcams, and EV chargers. The system now monitors more than 1 billion data points daily from connected commercial vehicles.

Dunbar said the system is designed to deliver manufacturer-grade accuracy by relying on direct vehicle data rather than the limited diagnostic trouble codes used by some aftermarket tools.

Ford Pro AI uses a multi-agent architecture built on structured fleet data, which Ford says helps reduce the risk of incorrect or “hallucinated” AI responses.

The Ford Pro AI assistant can also be accessed through the Ford Pro mobile interface, allowing fleet managers to query fleet data and receive operational insights directly from a smartphone.

Additional Details from Media Q&A

During the March 3 pre-briefing, Ford executives provided additional details about how Ford Pro AI works during a question-and-answer session with reporters.

Ford said the AI platform is built on Google Cloud Platform infrastructure, combined with Ford’s proprietary vehicle data and fleet datasets.

Executives said the company intentionally does not disclose the specific large language models used in the system, noting that the goal is to remain flexible as AI models evolve while focusing on Ford’s unique vehicle data and fleet insights.

Ford also emphasized that the system currently operates in a “read-only” mode, meaning it provides analysis and recommendations but does not automatically execute actions such as scheduling maintenance. Instead, it guides users to the appropriate tools within the Ford Pro Telematics platform where they can take action.

Ford executives also confirmed that the system can support multi-make fleets, a common scenario for commercial operators. Vehicles from other manufacturers can be analyzed by Ford Pro AI when connected to the Ford Pro Telematics platform via compatible data integrations.

Ford said the AI feature is included as a value-added capability in the Ford Pro Telematics subscription, meaning existing subscribers will gain access at no additional cost.

In response to questions about driver-facing functionality, Ford said Ford Pro AI is currently designed primarily for fleet managers using the telematics dashboard. Some functionality is accessible through the Ford Pro mobile app, but the system is not integrated directly into vehicle head units.

Ford said it currently has no announced plans to embed the AI assistant directly into vehicles, though it continues to gather customer feedback on future capabilities.

"We surveyed fleet managers to understand how much time they spent on specific tasks, and they said they spent an average of over 23 hours juggling routine things like scheduling service, managing drivers, and tracking costs," said Kevin Dunbar, General Manager, Ford Pro Intelligence. "They also told us they believe AI can help reduce this time by approximately 40%, and we agree. Ford pro AI was designed with a fleet manager's multi-hat reality in mind for coordinating vehicles, equipment, people, parts, and processes."

From Insight to Action

Ford said the goal of Ford Pro AI is to shorten the time between identifying a fleet issue and taking action.

Instead of manually reviewing logs or analyzing reports, fleet managers can ask the system questions and quickly receive recommendations, summaries, and suggested actions.

“What can take several hours in the afternoon can now take minutes,” the company said of the AI-enabled workflow.
