Volkswagen of America unveiled the 2027 Atlas ahead of the New York International Auto Show. The updated SUV features revised exterior styling, new interior materials, updated technology, and improved performance.
“When we first launched Atlas in 2017, we delivered the space and design the SUV market was missing,” said Kjell Gruner, president and CEO of Volkswagen of America. “The 2027 Atlas adds updated design, technology, and power.”
Exterior and Interior Updates
The 2027 Atlas receives new exterior sheet metal, updated front and rear lighting, and revised proportions. Design changes include stacked LED headlights, an updated grille, and new lighting signatures. Most trims feature illuminated badges and lighting elements. New wheel designs range from 18 to 21 inches, and three new exterior colors are available.
Inside, the cabin has been redesigned with updated materials and layout changes. A steering column-mounted shift lever creates additional space in the center console. Materials include soft-touch surfaces, wood trim, and available leather seating. Three interior color schemes are offered.
Standard and available features include:
Power liftgate and rear sunshades
Dual-zone climate control and additional rear air vents
Heated and ventilated seating options
Up to a 14-speaker premium audio system
Cargo and passenger space remain a focus, with available second-row captain’s chairs and a panoramic sunroof.
Technology and Safety Features
The Atlas includes updated infotainment and driver-assistance features. A 12.9-inch or 15-inch center display is paired with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Additional features include wireless charging, multiple USB-C ports, and a voice assistant with a one-year trial subscription.
Driver-assistance updates include:
IQ.DRIVE system enhancements
Travel Assist with lane-change capability
Emergency Assist for medical emergencies
Front and rear Park Distance Control
Park Assist Plus on upper trims
A front center airbag increases the total airbag count to seven.
Powertrain and Capability
The 2027 Atlas is built on the updated MQB Evo platform and is slightly longer than the outgoing model. It is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 282 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque.
An eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard, with all-wheel drive available. Towing capacity remains at 5,000 pounds when equipped with a factory-installed hitch.
Volkswagen said the new engine is expected to improve fuel efficiency compared to the previous model. A hybrid version is planned for a future update.
Production and Availability
The Atlas continues to be assembled in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport accounted for about 30% of Volkswagen’s U.S. sales in 2025.
Additional specifications and pricing will be announced ahead of the vehicle’s launch later this year.
