WASHINGTON - ALPS Electric Co. has informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that more than 12,700 airbag clock springs the company manufactured and sold to Volvo Cars and Jaguar Land Rover as original equipment is defective, the agency reported. As a result, Volvo and Jaguar Land Rover will notify affected vehicle owners, and dealers will provide the necessary repairs free of charge.
The defect poses the potential for an intermittent fault in the driver's airbag clock spring wiring connector for the supplemental restraint system. In the event of a crash, the driver's frontal airbag may not deploy as intended or at all.
ALPS Electric is not conducting the recall campaign; Volvo Cars and Jaguar Land Rover are handling that.
