WASHINGTON - General Motors Corp. is recalling 303,100 MY 2009-2010 Chevrolet Impalas because of a safety belt problem.

The front safety belt webbing may not have been properly secured to the lap belt anchor pretensioner mounted to the side of the seat nearest the door, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. As a result, the safety belt may not properly restrain the occupant in the event of a crash.

To remedy the problem, dealers will inspect both front safety belts to ensure proper installation of the anchors to the pretensioners. If needed, dealers will reinstall the anchors. There will be no charge for this service.

This GM safety recall (No. N100312) is expected to get under way by Oct. 26.
