Ford's 2020 Explorer Hybrid is expected to achieve an EPA-rated range of more than 500 miles as a rear-wheel-drive midsize SUV and will mark the fourth entry in the Explorer family, Ford announced at the Detroit auto show.

Explorer Hybrid will join Explorer ST, a performance variant also announced today, as well as the sixth-generation Explorer announced on Jan. 9 and the Explorer-based 2020 Police Interceptor Utility for law enforcement fleets that arrived Jan. 4.

The gasoline-electric hybrid Explorer is equipped with a 3.3-liter naturally aspirated V-6 gasoline engine with electrified power that produces 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain will deliver power via a 10-speed automatic transmission to drive the rear-wheel unibody SUV. A lithium-ion battery will be built into the chassis below the second-row seats.

Ford will offer six Explorer models, including base, XLT, Limited, Hybrid, ST, and Platinum, in addition to the law enforcement vehicle, which Ford expects to mostly sell to agencies as a hybrid model.

Explorer Hybrid will be based in the Limted trim with features such as Active Noise Cancellation, Co-Pilot360 Assist+, driver-assist technologies, leather seats with micro-perforation and accent stitching, second-row heated seats, a 14-speaker B&O premium sound system, wireless phone charging pad, and 10-way power adjustable driver and front passenger seats.
