Volvo Cars and Google previewed new in-vehicle AI and navigation features at the Google I/O conference on May 19-20, including a demonstration of Google Gemini integration with vehicle cameras in the upcoming Volvo EX60.
The companies said the system is intended to allow Gemini, with driver permission, to interpret the vehicle’s surroundings in real time using camera data. Potential uses include identifying road signs, interpreting lane markings, and providing information about nearby landmarks or businesses.
One example demonstrated was parking assistance. Volvo and Google said the system could read parking signs and provide drivers with information about restrictions, time limits, permit requirements, or EV charging rules.
The technology combines Google’s Gemini AI model with Volvo’s software-defined vehicle architecture and onboard neural processing capabilities.
Volvo also said it plans to introduce Google Maps’ new “Immersive Navigation” feature in future vehicles, beginning with the EX60, EX90, and ES90. The feature adds a 3D map view with visualizations of buildings, tunnels, and overpasses intended to help drivers navigate complex roads and intersections.
The navigation system will also include updated voice guidance that references landmarks alongside distance-based directions.
According to the companies, the announcements are part of their ongoing collaboration on in-car software and connected vehicle technologies.
