LEXINGTON, Va. --- During a presentation at an energy conference last week, Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine addressed the state's efforts to fight global warming. More specifically, he also talked about the state's efforts to explore the feasibility of producing biofuel from algae, the Virginian-Pilot reported. Researchers at Old Dominion have received $5,000 in state grants for the algae project. They recently gave the governor a small vial of the first batch of biofuel made from algae. Algae growth in the Chesapeake Bay is causing a host of environmental problems. It has created unhealthy swimming conditions and even caused fish to die. "If you could find a productive use for algae, that would be amazing," Kaine said. Kaine spoke at the Commonwealth of Virginia Energy and Sustainability Conference, held at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va. The conference, held Oct. 16-18, brought together hundreds of researchers, business leaders and policy makers to discuss alternative energy.
