Texas led all states by a wide margin in insurance claims filed for homes, vehicles, and other property that received hail damage from 2016 to 2018, according to a report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

The findings came from a three-year analysis of claims by the bureau.

Texas topped the list with 811,381 claims over that period, which was more than twice as many as the next state on the list. There were 395,025 claims filed in Colorado during the period. Colorado was the clear second highest state with more than twice as many claims as the other top five states.

Nebraska's 163,336 claims were good for third place, followed by Missouri with 153,403 claims and Kansas with 146,206 claims.

Cities with the most hail damage claims included San Antonio (75,187); Colorado Springs, Colo. (67,920); Omaha, Neb. (52,803); Denver (48,357); and Plano, Tex. (42,659).

May was the month with the highest number of hail loss claims with 203,296 followed by June (178,881); April (164,232); March (153,716); and July (96,947).

Claims involving personal auto policies were second on the list behind personal property or home with 898,500 claims. Third was personal property on farms. There were 1.65 million personal property homeowners claims.

"Hail damage fluctuates year-to-year, but what seems to be consistent is the number of unscrupulous contractors ready to swoop in promising a quick fix, which is why NICB encourages policyholders to use caution when selecting a contractor or other workers to help repair your property or replace your windshield following a storm," said Brooke Kelley, NICB vice president of communications.
