WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The U.S. average retail price for regular gasoline retreated from the highest recorded January price, dropping 4.1 cents to $3.068 per gallon as of Jan. 14. That's 83.9 cents above a year ago, the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported. Prices dropped throughout the country, with the Midwest showing the largest regional decrease of 9.1 cents to hit $3.010 per gallon -- 93.3 cents per gallon more than last year, the EIA reported. The East Coast price fell 1.6 cents to $3.108 per gallon. The Gulf Coast price decreased 2 cents to $2.957 per gallon. The Rocky Mountains saw a 0.1 cent decline to settle at $2.949 per gallon, the lowest regional price. The West Coast saw the highest regional price, with a decline of 3.3 cents to $3.214 per gallon. The average price for regular grade in California diminished to $3.290 per gallon, 3.8 cents less than the previous week. The retail diesel fuel price decreased a nickel to $3.326 per gallon, 86.3 cents higher than last year. All regional diesel prices were lower, with the East Coast down 4.5 cents to hit $3.391 per gallon. The Midwest diesel price fell 5.7 cents to $3.288 per gallon. The Gulf Coast price declined 5.2 cents to $3.266 per gallon. The Rocky Mountain diesel price was reduced by 1.5 cents to $3.261 per gallon and was the lowest regional price. The West Coast price lost 5.4 cents to settle at $3.420 per gallon. California diesel prices tumbled 6.7 cents to $3.459 per gallon, the EIA reported.
