Prices are down 14.8 cents from a month ago and 6.6 cents from a year ago.
“The national average once again briefly dipped below the $3 per gallon mark, but the drop will be short-lived,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Gas prices are likely to rebound soon in the Great Lakes states due to ongoing refinery challenges, while a new snag at a California refinery may slow the pace of declines on the West Coast. To top it off, OPEC+ announced another increase in oil production for December over the weekend, although it also signaled a pause in further increases from January through March. For now, expect the national average to hover in the low-$3 range, potentially drifting lower once refinery issues are resolved.”

The national average for fuel prices rose 4.8 cents last week, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 12 million individual price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations nationwide.
The national average sits at $3.03 per gallon. Prices are down 4.0 cents from a month ago and up 0.8 cents from a year ago.
“The national average price of gasoline edged higher last week, with the vast majority of states seeing prices climb,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Refinery issues in the Great Lakes and West Coast have kept prices elevated, and gasoline inventory data from the government showed another large weekly drop in supplies, which has temporarily propped up prices. With thousands of flight cancellations ahead of Thanksgiving due to the FAA flight cuts, there could be slight shifts in gasoline demand, which may limit any near-term declines.”

Gas prices remain at $3.02, but Thanksgiving travel makes that number volatile.

Prices are near the lowest holiday level since 2020, according to GasBuddy. GasBuddy’s forecast shows an average price of $3.02 per gallon on Thanksgiving Day, one of the lowest holiday averages since 2021. GasBuddy conducted a Thanksgiving Travel Survey that displayed a sharp 12% decline in holiday travelers this year, from 72% to 60%.
“Gas prices are cooperating this Thanksgiving, but that’s not translating into more travelers,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Drivers have grown more resilient to price swings, yet I worry that concerns about a cooling economy may be weighing on Americans’ willingness to travel. Even with affordable gas, economic uncertainty can make people stay closer to home.”
The survey also shows the traveler’s disregard for gas prices in relation to holiday plans: 74% report that gas prices have no effect on travel plans, up from 56% last year.
“Even with fewer people on the road, it pays to compare prices before filling up,” added De Haan. “Crossing a state line can mean a 10–25 cent jump in prices, and in rare cases, differences of up to a dollar per gallon. Tools like GasBuddy and Pay with GasBuddy+ can make a meaningful difference on longer trips.”

This is the first time in the U.S. that prices have dipped below $2 without promotions or deals since 2021.
Prices are near the lowest holiday level since 2020, according to GasBuddy. GasBuddy’s forecast shows an average price of $3.02 per gallon on Thanksgiving Day, one of the lowest holiday averages since 2021.
“It’s pretty compelling to see gas prices this low, falling ahead of Thanksgiving, and it signals what more Americans could experience in the coming months,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Lower seasonal demand, falling oil prices, and rising OPEC output are all pushing prices down. While a few stations have recently dipped below $2 through temporary offers and promotions, this marks the first time we’ve seen a regular sub-$2 price. Prices at this level may fluctuate, but more locations in low-cost states like Texas, Mississippi, and others across the Gulf region are likely to follow before the typical spring rebound we’ll likely see in 2026.”
A GasBuddy survey also shows that travelers disregard gas prices when planning holidays: 74% report that gas prices have no effect on travel plans, up from 56% last year.
