The 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter will retail for slightly less ($5) that the outgoing model for the base configuration, as the full-size cargo and passenger vans enter their third-generation with an array of updates, the company announced.

Mercedes-Benz Vans has shifted North American production of the Sprinter from Germany to a newly-built assembly plant just outside of Charleston, South Carolina. The base cargo models will retail for $40,985 for the diesel-powered van and $34,985 for the gasoline model. Prices include a $1,195 delivery fee. Pricing for the 2019 Freightliner Sprinter is the same.

Mercedes-Benz is adding two new trim grades, a gasoline engine, a factory telematics offering, and other features that increase the price from the base model. The 2019 Sprinter will be available as 1500, 2500, 3500, and 4500 models in two wheelbases (144 and 177 inches). The 1500 and 4500 models are new to the lineup. The van will be available in two roof heights and four body styles, including cargo, passenger, crew, and a chassis cab model.

The diesel-powered Sprinter will arrive first, followed by the gasoline model by the end of the year. The 3.0-liter V-6 diesel produces 190 horsepower and 324 pound-feet of torque. It's now paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission that replaces a five-speed gearbox. The 2.0-liter inline-four cylinder gasoline engine will make 190 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, and will be paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The gasoline engine will be available on the 1500 and 2500 cargo, passenger, and crew models.

The largest Sprinter increases the van's gross vehicle weight rating. The new 4500 model offers a 12,125 GVWR compared to the 2018 Sprinter 3500's 11,030 GVWR.

Pricing for the gasoline models has been set at $34,985 for the cargo model, $42,485 for the crew model, and $44,185 for the passenger van. Pricing for the diesel models has been set at $40,985 for the cargo model, $47,285 for the crew van, $50,185 for the passenger van, and $40,985 for the cab chassis.
