LeasePlan USA has joined the Road to Zero safety coalition and released three new safety programs, the Alpharetta, Ga.-based fleet management company has announced.

The coalition, which is managed by the National Safety Council, has set a goal to end roadway deaths by 2050. By joining, LeasePlan has agreed to follow the coalition's framework.

"Driver safety impacts each of us on the road, whether driving for personal or business trips," said Felipe Smolka, executive vice president of transformation at LeasePlan USA. "Here at LeasePlan, we recognize the importance of roadway safety and the impact it has. We are committed to leading the effort to zero-road fatalities."

LeasePlan's new safety programs include a collaboration with eDriving that will allow the company to take a data-centric approach to creating customized safety programs for fleets through scoring mechanisms and benchmarking. These programs also enable fleet managers to identify drivers in most need of training and support to reach standards for safe driving.

"We demand 100% safe operations in aviation, marine, pipeline, rail and transit, we should cultivate a corresponding societal demand for safe roads," said Deborah A.P. Hersman, the council's president and CEO. "With these three guidelines, everyone can do something to reduce fatalities on the roadway. Getting to zero fatalities is not impossible. It just hasn't been done yet."
