The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has recognized Honda's 2019 Insight gasoline-electric hybrid and 2019 Pilot midsize SUV with its Top Safety Pick+ status after undergoing a series of rigorous crash tests.
The 2019 Insight garnered good ratings from IIHS in six critical tests — the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests as well as the passenger-side small overlap test. It was redesigned since its last incarnation in 2014.
In addition, the Insight comes standard with a superior-rated front crash prevention system, which avoided collisions in IIHS track tests at 12 mph and 25 mph. The car's only available headlights — LED reflectors with high-beam assist — got a good rating from the institute.
The Pilot aced five crash tests, capturing good ratings in all. The SUV garnered an acceptable rating in the passenger-side small overlap test.
The manufacturer updated the Pilot for 2019 by adding a standard superior-rated front crash prevention system, which helped it avoid a collision in the 12-mph track test and reduced the impact speed in the 25-mph test. The 2019 Pilot also has improved headlights. Its available LED reflector headlights with high-beam assist earn a good rating, while the Pilot's base headlights rate acceptable.
