The average price of unleaded gasoline fell 2.6 cents to $3.678 per gallon for the week ending July 7, reports the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
The price of a gallon of regular unleaded is now 18.6 cents higher than it was a year ago as prices continue their sideways trajectory following a spike in the early spring.
Prices were mixed in the nine sub-regions where gasoline fell in five regions and rose in four. The biggest decline came in the Midwest, where the per-gallon price fell 5.7 cents to $3.614. The Rocky Mountain region saw a 1.3-cent rise.
The average price is now at least $3.50 in 40 states and the District of Columbia, according to the AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report. The average price is above $4 per gallon in Alaska, California, Hawaii, and Washington.
Meanwhile, the average price of diesel dropped seventh-tenths of a cent to $3.913 per gallon. Diesel is now 8.5 cents higher than a year ago.
