LOS ANGELES --- DaimlerChrysler and Volkswagen announced that their Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz, VW and Audi brands had plans to introduce almost a dozen cars and SUVs with diesel engines employing a clean-burning technology called Bluetec. The announcement came on the eve of the Los Angeles Auto Show. According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, Mercedes-Benz developed the Bluetec emission-cleaning technology to comply with new diesel emission standards in the United States. Mercedes-Benz unveiled three Bluetec-equipped cars in October: an E320 sedan, an ML SUV and an R-Class sport wagon. The company also said it planned to add the system to its GL SUV in 2007. Chrysler said its first Bluetec-equipped vehicle would be a Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV. The Times also reported that Volkswagen plans to employ a four-cylinder diesel in its Jetta sedan and a new small SUV called the Tiguan in 2008, along with diesel versions of its Touareg large SUV and Passat midsize sedan by 2009. Audi has plans to introduce a diesel vehicle in 2008.
