U.S. vehicle purchasers have been slow to add natural gas powered passenger cars, while other global markets have been quicker out of the gate, according to a paid report from research firm Markets and Markets.

Developing countries especially in the Asia-Pacific region have seen local governments converting light-duty vehicles to run on CNG. Japan, Thailand, and Hong Kong have begun widely using taxis powered by propane autogas.

The report cites evidence such as the slow sales of the Honda Civic CNG to bolster its claim. Honda launched the vehicle in 1998 and now sells about 1,500 units per year, mostly to government fleets.
