Chevrolet's 2019 Silverado that's powered by a new turbocharged 2.7L four-cylinder engine can achieve 23 mpg on the highway and 20 mpg in city driving in the rear-wheel-drive configuration paired to an 8-speed transmission, according to General Motors

The new engine produces more horsepower and torque than the standard 4.3L V-6 and reduces the Silverado 1500's curb weight by 380 pounds. Interior room and cargo space have also been increased.

Chevrolet is offering the new engine on LT and RST trim grades. Torque increases 14% (to 348 lb.-ft.), while horsepower is boosted by 13% (to 310 hp) over the 4.3L V-6. The pickup can tow up to 7,200 pounds and carry up to 2,280 pounds of payload.

To achieve these towing and payload ratings, the 2.7L Silverado will need to be purchased with a regular cab. This model will initially be available only to fleet customers, according to GM.

The engine uses several technologies that help is achieve a balance of power and fuel efficiency, such as variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation to boost efficiency, a dual-volute turbocharger housing to improve throttle response, and "active thermal management" to use optimize engine heating and cooling across the powertrain.

Chevrolet has completed extensive testing of the engine with more than 475,000 validation tests and 1 million miles of road testing.
