Kia has unveiled its 2020 Telluride three-row SUV that provides seating for up to eight occupants at the Detroit auto show.

The Telluride slots in above the Sorento, Kia's other three-row SUV that competes against other midsize SUVs. It's bold, truck-like styling should put in completition with the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. Kia will build the vehicle at the Georgia assembly plant that now builds the Sorento.

The Telluride is powered by a 3.8-liter V-6 engine that should produce 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. The engine delivers power through an eight-speed automatic transmission to a front-wheel drivetrain. The vehicle shares a unibody platform with the Hyundai Palisade.

Several safety systems are standard, including downhill brake control, electronic stability control, hill-start assist control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Standard advanced safety systems include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional systems include high beam assist, blind spot monitor, parking distance warning, and surround view monitor.

The Telluride will also offer available semi-autonomous driving technology called Highway Driving Assist, a radar-based system that interprets lane markings so the vehicle can control steering, acceleration, and braking to adjust distance from the vehicle ahead.

The 2020 Telluride will go on sale in May.
