Ford's 2019 Transit Connect wagon improves combined fuel economy by more than 13% with gasoline over the outgoing model, and achieves 30 miles per gallon on the highway when equipped with a new diesel engine, Ford has announced.

The compact passenger van achieves the rating when equipped with the 2.0-liter direct-injected inline four-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic transmission with automatic stop-start technology, the front-wheel-drive van also achieves 24 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. A similar outgoing model gained an EPA-rating of 20 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg combined. Ratings for the 2019 Transit Connect wagon would surpass competitive vehicles.

The 2019 Transit Connect also brings the first diesel engine to the compact van segment — a 1.5-liter EcoBlue turbocharged four-cylinder that first appeared in the European EcoSport crossover. The engine has achieved a preliminary EPA-rated 30 mph. Final ratings will be available in early 2019 closer to when the van goes on sale.

Ford has released a few other specifications about its new compact passenger van, including its turning radius of 38.3 feet for the short-wheelbase model. The van should offer a towing capability of 2,000 pounds on vehicles with the available trailer tow package.
