The new diesel engine that will power the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 will be the most powerful engine among large pickups, according to General Motors.

The new Duramax 3.0L inline-six turbodiesel will deliver an SAE-certified 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, which is "more than any other light-duty, full-size truck diesel available," according to a GM statement.

Commercial customers and dealers can now place orders for the pickups, which GM will begin delivering this summer. GM will release towing capacity and efficiency information in the near future."

GM's diesel engine will be priced the same as its 6.2-liter V-8 gasoline engine and as a $2,495 premium over the 5.3-liter V-8 model. It will retail for $3,890 over the 2.7-liter inline-four turbocharged gasoline engine.

For comparison, Ford's 3.0-liter Power Stroke V-6 diesel makes 250 hp and 440 lb.-ft. of torque in the 2019 F-150 and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' earlier 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 in the Ram 1500 made 240 hp and 420 lb.-ft. of torque. Ram has announced plans to update this engine.
