The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze's 42 miles per gallon on the highway, as rated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, increased from initial estimates by GM that the compact car would deliver 40 mpg highway.

The Cruze achieves 42 mpg highway when equipped with a new turbo 1.4L inline-four that features direct injection and makes 153 hp and 177 lb.-ft. of torque and an automatic transmission. The vehicle has been rated to achieve 30 mpg in the city. When equipped with a manual, the Cruze loses 1 mpg in city and highway cycles.

The Cruze Limited achieves an EPA-rated 38 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg in the city with automatic or manual transmissions. GM is offering the Cruze Limited with an optional 1.8L inline-four that returns 36 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg in the city with a manual transmission or 35 mpg highway and 22 mpg city with an automatic.

The Cruze Limited Eco also achieves the 42 mpg highway when equipped with the 1.4L and manual 6-speed transmission. The vehicle has been rated to achieve 28 mpg in the city. The Limited Eco with an automatic transmission achieves 39 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg in the city.

The Cruze Premier with the 1.4L achieves 40 mpg highway and 30 mpg city with a 401-mile range enabled by its 11.8-gallon fuel tank.
