Getting into Fleet

Murray has worked for Agfa Corporation for almost 40 years, with the past eight involved in fleet.

Currently, Murray manages all aspects of the North American fleet with the company’s FMC partner; updates and maintains the fleet policy, selector choices, OEM relationships, and more. She also handles other internal functions such as budgeting and internal relationships with end-users and executive management.

“Due to a pending retirement in our General Services group at the end of 2011, I was asked to take over North American Fleet and Travel responsibilities for the company, with a reduction in my Facilities obligations. I agreed, and then, due to another organizational change in our group the following year, I was tasked with managing fleet, travel, and all facilities functions for North America, which my staff and I continue to manage today,” Murray explained.

Murray set active goals when she took over fleet for Agfa and has worked hard to accomplish them, with the support of her now-retired manager/mentor.

“Streamlining all processes and selectors was the first on my list once taking over a legacy program. The reduction of selectors simplified management of the vehicle choice and strengthened the relationships with the OEM’s in our program. Next was the removal of the reimbursement program and consolidation to a fleet car program. Personally, my goal was to acquire my CAFM, which I did in 2017. I was also awarded Automotive Fleet’s Fleet Visionary of the Year award in 2018 at the AFLA conference. I currently serve as the Chapter Chair for New Jersey NAFA,” Murray said.

Murray’s responsibility to her company keeps her motivated to run the best fleet program she can.

“The fleet industry is exciting with all the automotive advances and, along with changes in mobility options, keeps the field open to new learning opportunities. These new mobility options allow synergy with my travel program, benefitting fleet discussions and decisions,” she said.

When it comes to advice for others in the industry? Many paths can lead to fleet professions, so open your scope when searching.

“Embrace the challenges and opportunities presented to you, as you’ll never know what you can do unless you try. Don’t be afraid to propose changes to a legacy program for process improvement. Above all, network! The fleet community is a welcoming group and shares knowledge among its members, making both new and existing members valuable assets to the community,” she said.

Get to Know Me

Experience is only part of our story and what someone likes to read, watch, and listen to can help paint a fuller picture of their personality. Here are some of Murray’s favorites:

  • Book: Tuesdays with Morrie; it’s a short read but inspirational,” she said.

  • Movie: “No favorite movie, but a play: Come from Away. The play is an uplifting depiction of compassion and caring and a true event,” Murray said.

  • Songs: “Jersey Girl by Bruce Springsteen. But, being a Jersey girl myself, just about any Springsteen song is a favorite,” she said.

  • You May Not Know: “I am trained as a draftsman and started my work career at a design firm drafting interior/furniture floor plans, and I am currently the Chairperson of the Saddle Brook Zoning Board of Adjustment,” Murray shared.
