Automotive Fleet connects with fleet managers and industry pros alike to get to know them both personally and professionally, which is why we created the Fleet Meets series. This is a series where we like to get to know the community behind the data, numbers, and tech talk–it’s where we get to know the human.
Meet this year’s Spirit of Fleet winner, Erin Gilchrist.
You recently received the inaugural Mike Antich Spirit of Fleet Award. What does that recognition mean to you, and how has Mike's influence shaped the way you approach leadership and mentorship?
Gilchrist: Honestly, this one is hard to put into words. Mike was a dear friend, so receiving the first award in his name was incredibly personal. I was completely surprised, and the tears were very real.
Mike made people feel that they belonged and had something worth contributing. He could encourage you while also challenging you to think a little bigger. That has stayed with me.
In my own leadership and mentoring, I try to make time for people and help them see what they're capable of. Sometimes that means sharing a lesson I learned the hard way. Sometimes it's making an introduction or encouraging someone to speak up. Receiving this award makes me want to keep doing that and be incredibly thoughtful about how I carry his example forward.
You've built a career around fleet management and connecting with others in the industry. What's one thing you've learned from the fleet community that has stayed with you throughout your career?
Gilchrist: You don't have to figure everything out by yourself. Ask the question. Make the call.
There is so much generosity in this community. people are willing to share what worked, what didn't, and what they wish they had known sooner. I've benefited from that throughout my career, and I feel a responsibility to Offer the same help to others.
The relationships you build in fleet can stay with you through job changes, difficult decisions, and entirely new chapters. I'm incredibly grateful for that.
What is the best career advice you've ever received?
Gilchrist: First and foremost is that happy people do great work! Therefore, led by example and treat others like THEY want to be treated.
Next, don't wait until you feel completely ready to take the next step.
You can do your homework and prepare, but some things you only learn by doing. I think we sometimes underestimate what we're capable of because we're waiting to feel more qualified or more confident. Be willing to stretch, ask for help, and learn as you go. Confidence often comes after you've taken that first step.
What is something people in the fleet industry would be surprised to learn about you outside of work?
Gilchrist: Not sure there's anything surprising! I love to cook, host, cycle, hike, and snowmobile! I have 11 siblings and we have 67 children. My parents also have 18 great grandchildren and 6 on the way! so fun!
If you were an animal, what type of animal would you be and why?
Gilchrist: I'm going with a golden retriever. I love people, I'm loyal, and I tend to bring a lot of enthusiasm to the things I care about. I'm happiest when I'm connecting with others and making sure everyone feels welcome.
Finish this sentence: "The future of fleet is__"
Gilchrist: The future of fleet is powered by technology and led by people. I'm excited about what Al and new technology can help us accomplish, especially when they give us better information and more time to focus on people and the business. We need to keep investing in the people using those tools, too, helping them ask better questions and grow as leaders. Fleet managers have an opportunity to be influential voices inside their organizations, shaping culture and leading change. They can show how fleet decisions affect customer service, support growth, and improve profitability. That's where I want to keep contributing helping fleet professionals build that influence and demonstrate the value they bring to the business.
