Fleet managers today are navigating an ever-changing landscape of liability and cost. With new technologies increasingly integrated into vehicles, distracted driving has become an inevitable hurdle for fleet managers.

One approach gaining traction is software designed to limit phone use while driving.

Software vs Hardware

LifeSaver Mobile offers a software-based platform designed to help fleets address distracted driving without installing hardware.

The LifeSaver app enhances driver safety by enabling a range of features to ensure call compliance while a driver is on the road.

Those features include:

  • Screen Blanking: This feature blocks the phone screen when the app detects driving. Company-approved apps, like navigation, can be permitted as needed.

  • Call Compliance: If hands-free calling is permitted, this feature can block and/or report any calls made while driving, without a hands-free connection. If no calls are permitted, it can black out and/or report any calls attempted while driving.

  • Speeding Alerts: This feature provides real-time voice alerts to drivers when it identifies speeds over the speed limit. It also logs all instances of speeding violations with detailed geotracking.

Real Life Use Case

K&B Transportation, a refrigerated food transport company based in South Sioux City, Nebraska, operates approximately 800 trucks and moves perishable goods nationwide. In 2022, the company partnered with LifeSaver to help reduce insurance costs and increase fleet safety.

K&B’s deployment centered on three key elements:

  • Real-time driver feedback

  • Behavioral analytics

  • Cultural transformation supported by round-the-clock enforcement

The results were clear: a 67% reduction in crash frequency over three years.

Crash frequency reduction isn’t just a safety metric; it’s a financial lever.

Turning Safety Performance into Insurance Leverage

K&B was able to effectively modify their drivers' behaviors without video monitoring, reducing liability and making K&B attractive to insurers.

With over 20 firms seeking to insure K&B, their drastically improved claims history allowed them to dictate their terms and ultimately lower their insurance costs.

The company ultimately transitioned to a self-insured model, reclaiming control over insurance costs and unlocking millions in annual savings.
