SACRAMENTO, CA – California Governor Jerry Brown has signed a bill that requires all car dealers in the state to post a disclosure notice on all used cars they sell that the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) identifies as having a junk, salvage or flood branded title.

The red-sticker disclosure notice will warn potential vehicle buyers that the vehicle has been "reported as a total-loss vehicle by an insurance company, has been reported into NMVTIS by a junk or salvage reporting entity, or has a title brand which may materially affect the value, safety, and/or condition of the vehicle." Further, the notice advises consumers to ask the dealer to view the NMVTIS vehicle history report or to access it online

The NMVTIS is administered by the U.S. Department of Justice.

The law goes into effect July 1, 2012.
