WASHINGTON - General Motors is recalling more than 26,700 model year 2011 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV 1500, Escalade EXT 1500; Chevrolet Avalanche 1500, Colorado, Silverado 1500, Suburban 1500, Tahoe; and GMC Canyon, Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the rear axle cross pins were not properly heat-treated and could fracture and become displaced within the rear axle. If the pin shifts out of position, this could create an interference condition and cause the rear axle to lock. As a result, the driver may lose directional control of the vehicle, posing s safety risk.

To remedy the problem, dealers will install a new rear axle cross pin free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin around Jan. 25. Owners can reach Cadillac at (866) 982-2339, Chevrolet at (800) 630-2438, and GMC at (866) 996-9463. Information is also available online at www.gmownercenter.com.
