Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling 3,751 2019 Prius hybrids for an electrical short that could cause the speed and fuel display to go blank, according to federal records.

A short circuit in the combination meter could cause the speedometer, odometer, and fuel gauge in the instrument cluster to become inoperative, which would increase the risk of a crash.

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the production date of the ROM flash memory chip. They will replace the chip and combination meter circuit if necessary. The recall is expected to begin on Feb. 3.

Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for the recall are 19TA21 and 19TB21. To reach the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's safety hotline, call 888-327-4236.
