Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is recalling approximately 6,322 2018-2019 Atlas midsize SUVs, 2015 Golf SportWagen compact cars, and 2019 Jetta compact sedans because the rear coil springs may prematurely fracture.

If a coil spring breaks while the vehicle is in motion, it may damage a rear tire, causing a loss of control for the driver and increasing the likelihood of a crash.

To fix the problem, Volkswagen has notified owners, and dealers will replace the rear axle coil springs at no cost to owners.

The recall began Jan. 31. Owners can reach Volkswagen's customer service at (800) 893-5298. The number for this recall is 42J2/42J3.
