The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently recognized the Volvo 2018 S90 and the Volvo 2019 XC90 with 2018 Top Safety Pick awards. These latest awards mean Volvo now has a total of five models that earned a 2018 award from IIHS.

Both Volvo vehicles went through a series of challenging crashworthiness tests and neither disappointed. Rather, Volvo's flagship S90 sedan and XC90 midsize SUV scored good ratings across the board. Specifically, they earned good rankings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests.

Both Volvo vehicles also offer standard, superior-rated front crash prevention.

In addition, vehicles must also earn acceptable- or good-rated headlights to garner a Top Safety Pick award. That was the case with the XC90, which is available with either curve-adaptive or static headlights — both earn an acceptable rating.

The S90 qualifies for a Top Safety Pick only when outfitted with the optional curve-adaptive headlights rather than the static headlights that come with the base trim that earned an acceptable rating.
