Hyundai Motor Co. is recalling 883,000 2011-2014 model-year Sonata sedans because of a potential transmission problem, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports. 

The transmission shift cable might detach from the shift lever pin. As a result, the car might not actually be in the gear selected by the driver. The vehicle might move unexpectedly forward or backward, even if the driver believes the car is parked. 

The recall affects vehicles manufactured from Dec. 11, 2009, through May 29 of this year. To resolve the problem, Hyundai dealers will inspect and -- if necessary -- repair the connection between the shift cable and shift lever. There will be no charge for this service.

Hyundai has not yet provided a notification schedule. Vehicle owners, however, can reach Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. The company's number for this recall is 123.
