The national average for gas prices has hit a low not seen since exiting the pandemic.
The national average stands at $2.95 per gallon, which is 8.5 cents less than a week ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 12 million individual price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.
This average is down 6.9 cents from a year ago and 5.4 cents lower than a year ago.
“Nearly every state saw average gas prices fall heading into Thanksgiving, with the national average dipping below $3 per gallon for several consecutive days—falling to $2.95 per gallon over the weekend, the lowest level since May 2021,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “With refinery maintenance largely complete and OPEC increasing oil production for December, oil prices have struggled. Combine those factors, and you have a solid recipe for continued downward pressure on gas prices in the weeks ahead. A few dozen stations are already offering gas under $2 per gallon, and we could see that number grow as we move further into the holiday season. It couldn’t come at a better time for Americans—with relief arriving just as the holidays kick off.”
Here’s a look at prices by region according to EIA data, as of December 1:
East Coast: $2.93
Midwest: $2.74
Gulf Coast: $2.60
Rocky Mountain: $2.55
West Coast: $4.03
All regions saw a price decrease this week.

The national average for gas prices dipped once again.
The national average stands at $2.90 per gallon, which is 5.0 cents less than a week ago, according to GasBuddy® data compiled from more than 12 million individual price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.
This average is down 17.6 cents from a month ago and 7.3 cents lower than a year ago.
“Gas prices continued to decline in most states last week, while some price-cycling states saw temporary spikes to restore margins,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “With the national average falling further, we’re now at multi-year lows heading into Christmas. Diesel prices are also easing, and in the cheapest cities, averages have dipped into the low-$2 range, with a few stations still offering gas under $2 per gallon. Barring any major disruptions, prices are likely to stay relatively low into the new year.”

Holiday-goers and Christmas travelers will find the perfect Christmas gift for their journeys—the lowest prices at the pumps since the pandemic.
This holiday pricing decline continues a trend, as 2024 numbers were also the lowest since 2020.
“Christmas is often when gas prices settle near the lowest levels of the year, and 2025 is no exception,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
The national average gas price is estimated at $2.79 on Christmas Day, according to GasBuddy. This is 21 cents lower than last year’s average.
“Refinery maintenance has wrapped up, supplies are rising, and winter demand is much lower than in summer — all of which help keep a lid on prices. Provided there are no surprises, holiday travelers should see pump prices a bit lower than last Christmas. We’re also seeing encouraging early trends as we prepare to release our 2026 Fuel Outlook in January, with signs that lower prices could continue into next year. For those traveling across state lines, keep in mind the extreme volatility in prices that can occur between states and save yourself 20-80 cents per gallon by filling up on the cheaper side.”

U.S Regional Gasoline Prices as of December 22, 2025
The national average for gas prices has continued to decline over the last month, as predicted holiday numbers have come to fruition.
“For a fourth straight week, the national average price of gasoline has declined, as conditions remain ripe for some of the lowest seasonal gas prices in five years,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
The national average gas price is officially $2.79, according to GasBuddy. This is 21 cents lower than last year’s average and 26 cents lower than last month.
“Oil prices continue to struggle amid rising U.S., Canadian, and OPEC+ oil production, while refinery output remains near some of the highest seasonal levels in years — factors that are likely to keep gas prices under pressure over the weeks ahead. We’re continuing to see some gas prices below $2 per gallon in the nation’s cheapest states, now at more than 125 gas stations. Diesel prices have also seen some relief, though inventories remain tight, keeping the national average higher than a year ago.”
