Lytx® Inc. released its reimagined “2025 Road Safety Report”, previously known as “State of the Data”. The report analyzes over 300 billion miles of driving data to reveal road safety insights, safety trends, and emerging risks for commercial fleets. This year’s report highlights that after a steady decline between 2018 and 2020, collision rates and risky driving behavior have been rising since 2023.

Collision Trends: From Q3 2023 to Q4 2024, collision rates per vehicle increased by 24% across the industry. However, severe collision incidents declined during this same period. Level 1 collisions (highest severity) decreased by 6%, and Level 2 collisions (moderate severity) dropped by 59%. Risky driving behaviors also decreased by 4% in 2024 among drivers using Lytx technology.

Near Collisions: Near-collision also increased, up 52% when comparing Q4 2024 to Q4 2023, as roads have become increasingly congested.

Risky Driving Behaviors: Following too close, the use of a handheld device, not wearing a seat belt, and speeding continue to top the list. Notable increases and decreases from 2023 to 2024 include: Speed violation (+9%), Food or drink (+7%), No seat belt (-13%) and a Handheld device (-9%).

Following Distance: Following distances of less than 1 second increased by 19% from 2023 to 2024, while 1–2 second following distances increased by 2%.

The Impact of Weather: Driving too fast for conditions made drivers 4x more likely to be in a Level 1 collision. Fog is the most dangerous weather condition, increasing Level 1 collision likelihood by 2.8x. Winter carries double the risk for collisions compared to other seasons.

Fuel Efficiency and Speeding: In 2024, Lytx clients showed an 8.7% reduction in time spent speeding per vehicle, which helped fleets decrease fuel costs.

Sustainability Impact: Lytx clients saved an estimated $22 million in fuel in 2024 and prevented 110 million pounds of CO2 emissions.

•    Risk was highest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., with a peak at 2 p.m.
•    New Year’s Eve recorded the highest number of collisions among holidays.
•    Christmas Day followed closely in collision frequency.
•    A 12% increase in collisions was observed on major holidays compared to other days of the same week.

The findings are based on global driving data processed by Lytx, encompassing over 300 billion miles traveled by more than 5.5 million drivers in over 90 countries. In 2024, the dataset included over 209 million driving events and over 106 million driving behaviors, recorded using DriveCam® technology.
