Eight out of 15 of the most stolen cars over the past ten years are made by Japanese automakers. However, when it comes to pickup trucks, car thieves prefer American brands.
The data comes from a new analysis from The Zebra, which uses the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s (NICB) Hot Wheels Reports from 2010-2020 to identify the15 most stolen vehicles over the past decade.
With 513,025 vehicle thefts from 2010 to 2020, the Honda Accord ranks as the number one most stolen can in America. The Honda Civic is a close second with 471,327 thefts over the past decade.
However, the list of 15 also includes four pickups. These popular fleet vehicles appear to be popular among thieves as well.
For example, Ford pickups like the F-Series are one of the best-selling vehicles in the nation, so it’s no surprise that they’re also the third most stolen vehicle — with 337,287 total thefts from 2010-2020. Ford pickups are also the most stolen pickup in the country.
Chevrolet pickups are the fourth most stolen vehicle in America, with 308,105 thefts over the past decade. Thefts of Chevy models have increased by 26% since 2019 — more than any other vehicle on the Zebra list.
Also known as Ram trucks, Dodge full-size pickups rank sixth among all vehicles, with 128,313 thefts over the past decade. Fleet operators should be aware that thieves favor the Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500.
Taking the tenth spot on this list, GMC full-size pickups are another frequently stolen truck series across the nation, with 46,753 thefts over the past decade. The frequency of thefts for these pickup models is also on the rise, increasing nearly 17% from 2019.
Perhaps most noteworthy, pickup popularity among thieves has gained even greater traction in the current decade — with specific models moving up the list to make the top two spots for 2020.
Specifically, Ford full-size pickups rank as the number one most stolen vehicle in 2020 with 44,014 thefts, according to the latest NICB Hot Wheels report. The second most stolen vehicle in 2020 was the Chevrolet full-size pickup series with 40,968 thefts.
