The redesigned Volvo XC60, when equipped with certain headlights, qualifies as a Top Safety Pick+ award winner, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announced.

To earn the 2017 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, a vehicle must draw the highest rating of “good” in all five IIHS crashworthiness test categories — small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. Moreover, the vehicle must garner a rating of “advanced” or “superior” for front crash prevention and a rating of “acceptable” or “good” for headlights.

Like the previous generation, the 2018 XC60 aced the crashworthiness tests. The vehicle’s standard front crash prevention system improved from an “advanced” rating to a “superior” rating, IIHS said. The 2017 XC60 was also available with “superior”-rated front crash prevention, but only with the addition of optional equipment.

In track tests at 12 mph and 25 mph, the 2018 model avoided collisions, according to IIHS. The mid-size luxury SUV also has a forward collision-warning component that meets criteria from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

When equipped with the Advanced package, the XC60 drew an “acceptable” headlight rating. That’s a step down from the 2017 model, whose best available headlights earned a “good” rating.

IIHS said it hasn’t yet had the opportunity to test the headlights on an XC60 without the Advanced package.
