Volvo Readies Self-Driving XC90 for Production

Volvo Cars and Uber have developed a fully autonomous XC90 SUV with Uber's self-driving system as part of a partnership the companies struck in 2016.
The vehicle is ready to enter production, and will help Volvo meet its goal of producing autonomous vehicles by the early 2020s, according to the company.
Volvo will use a similar vehicle concept for its own self-driving vehicle development. Volvo plans to use autonomous technologies with its next-generation of Volvo models based on the SPA2 platform. The vehicles will be able to achieve Level 4 autonomy in designated areas such as highways and ring roads, according to Volvo.
"By the middle of the next decade we expect one-third of all cars we sell to be fully autonomous," said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. "Our agreement with Uber underlines our ambition to be the supplier of choice to the world's leading ride-hailing companies."
Autonomous vehicles can offer a better driving experience, according to Volvo, because they take away "mundane tasks such as stop-start driving in traffic jams."
