Volkswagen will show its Tarok smaller concept pickup at the New York auto show this week with plans to begin selling the vehicle in Brazil this year. While the company has no plans to sell the vehicle to U.S. buyers, it's hoping to "gauge market reaction" for the compact pickup, according to Volkswagen.

The Tarok is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder TSI engine that's paired with VW's 4Motion all-wheel drive system. The engine makes 147 horsepower and uses a six-speed transmission to deliver power.

If offered in the U.S., the Tarok would likely be the smallest pickup on the market with a length of 193.5 inches. Ford's 2019 Ranger measures 210.8 inches. The Tarok would have a wheelbase of 117.7 inches.

The car-like Tarok uses a design that allows the pickup bed to extend into the cab. The bed length of 47.5 inches (just under 4 feet) would be the shortest bed available.

Volkswagen entered a partnership with Ford earlier this year, where Ford agreed to develop a midsize pickup that both companies could sell in various global markets. At the 2018 New York show, the company showed a midsize pickup concept called the Atlas Tanoak.
