The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has bestowed its highest safety accolade on three Volvo vehicles — the 2022 Volvo S90, S90 Recharge and V90 Cross Country. All three large luxury cars recently rolled away with Top Safety Pick+ awards.
These latest awards bring Volvo’s 2022 Top Safety Pick+ total to 13 vehicles — the most among all manufacturers.
The trio of Volvos underwent a series of six rigorous crashworthiness evaluations and earned good scores across the board. These included the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength, and head restraint tests.
But to capture “plus” status vehicles must also be available with a front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. The three Volvos did not disappoint. They each come with a new, standard front crash prevention system that earns a superior rating in the institute’s vehicle-to-vehicle evaluation and an advanced rating in the vehicle-to-pedestrian test.
Though one of the most basic of safety features, headlights are often where vehicles fall short and fail to earn “plus” status. To qualify for the top-tier award, IIHS engineers demand that good or acceptable headlights must be standard across all trims.
Here again the trio was triumphant. Regardless of trim, the three Volvos come with curve-adaptive, high-beam-assist-equipped LED reflector headlights that earn an acceptable rating.
