TORRANCE, CA – Toyota announced it plans to debut its new Prius c subcompact hybrid at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. In addition, the automaker said the vehicle will go on sale in the spring of 2012.

The automaker said it expects the vehicle will get better than 50 mpg in the city and will come equipped with Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive technology. The new model also comes equipped with a 1.5L DOHC four-cylinder, 16–valve with VVT-i that’s SULEV emissions certified.

The new Prius c is a five-door hatchback that the automaker said features aerodynamic styling that’s designed to enhance fuel efficiency and give it a sporty appearance. The new Prius model is nearly 19 inches shorter than the standard Prius. The wheelbase is six inches less, at 100.4 inches. The vehicle is just slightly shorter in height than the regular Prius, at 56.9 inches (vs. 58.7 inches for the standard Prius), and 66.7 inches wide, compared with 68.7 inches wide for the standard version of the vehicle.

Standard features on the vehicle will include Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, steering-wheel audio controls, and nine airbags on the 2012 model-year vehicle. The vehicle will also offer Toyota’s Entune system as an option.
