Subaru of America Inc. is recalling certain 2005-2009 model-year Outback and Legacy vehicles because of the threat of brake line corrosion, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.
The recall covers Subaru Outback and Legacy vehicles manufactured from December 2003 through April 2009. The number of vehicles involved is not yet determined.
The recall includes vehicles currently, or formerly, registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Because these states and the District of Columbia use road salt in snow removal/de-icing efforts, salt water has the potential to splash on the brake lines through a gap in the fuel tank protector. This poses the threat of excessive corrosion of the brake lines.
Brake line corrosion can lead to brake fluid leakage. In turn, fluid leakage may lengthen the distances required to slow or stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Subaru dealers will inspect the vehicles to check for brake fluid seepage. If none is found, the affected area will be rustproofed with anti-corrosion wax. If brake fluid seepage is present, however, the brake lines will be replaced followed by rustproofing with anti-corrosion wax. These services will be performed free of charge.
Vehicle owners can reach Subaru at 1-800-782-2783.
