DALTON, GA – Shaw Industries Plant 65 in Andalusia, Ala., has announced a facility-wide initiative to collect and use local cooking oil as a source of biodiesel, according to http://news.mywebpal.com.
In order to use the fuel to supply part of the needs for plant boiler fuel, Shaw’s Plant 65 invested in a unit that will process 100 gallons of biodiesel in 48 hours.
The $3 per gallon that will be saved by reducing the amount of diesel fuel the facility uses will offset freight costs and make the facility more financially-competitive. Additionally, the initiative provides a positive outlet for disposing cooking oil for employees and local businesses.
Plant employees are encouraged to participate in the initiative by collecting discarded cooking oil from friends, family, and local restaurants. Complimentary plastic one gallon jugs are provided throughout the community. No filtering or straining of the oil is required. Since the program launched on May 20, employees have collected over 450 gallons of cooking oil.
