Australian market September sales figures reveal all buyer segments are up compared to same time in 2020, despite lockdowns and significant supply disruptions, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI). 

In September, 83,312 new cars were sold, an increase of about 21% over the same period last year. Rental cars lead the increase with 109.8% growth YoY. Hybrids continue their rise in 2021 with 55,257 sold YTD compared to 40,657 in the same period last year. Electric vehicle sales volume also is growing: 3,568 sold YTD.

“To see an increase of 21% on 2020 figures is definitely encouraging news,” said Tony Weber, chief executive at FCAI, which represents companies that distribute new passenger vehicles, light commercial vehicles, motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles in Australia. 

“In many respects these figures give the industry great encouragement and excitement for what will be possible in 2022 when lockdowns will hopefully be a thing of the past,” said Weber. 

“The Sports Utility Market is up by 25% and the Light Commercial Market up 27%. With over 150 models on offer in these segments, competition amongst brands is delivering the best technology and lowest prices,” said Weber. 

Toyota was market leader in September with 24% of overall sales. The top five selling vehicles in September 2021 were the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Hilux, Corolla, RAV4 and Prado.
