New Jersey's Assembly has approved legislation that would establish a task force for the safe deployment of autonomous vehicles in the state, reports NJBIZ.
The bill aims to create the New Jersey Advanced Vehicle Task Force. The group's mission would be to conduct a study of semi-autonomous and fully-autonomous AVs, ranging from level three to level five vehicles. The task force would recommend laws, rules, and regulations for the use of AVs on New Jersey's roads.
The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission and the Department of Transportation would be required to assist the task force with necessary duties and projects, notes the report.
If the legislation passes, the task force will meet 90 days after the bill's effective date, and again within 180 days of their initial meeting. The group would be responsible for issuing a report to Gov. Phil Murphy and the Legislature evaluating safety standards and recommending best practices, notes NJBIZ.
The eight-member task force will include a representative from the New Jersey Department of Transportation, the Motor Vehicle Commission and the Division of Highway Traffic Safety. It will be rounded out with five public members, three of whom will be appointed by Gov. Phil Murphy.
New Jersey joins Texas, which recently announced the development of a Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Task Force with the goal of advancing that state as a hub for new initiatives and investments in self-driving vehicle projects.
