Mitsubishi’s 2023 Triton pickup truck will offer plug-in hybrid technology, which could make the model the world’s first mainstream hybrid 1-ton light commercial vehicle, according to a recent by the Australasian Fleet Management Association (AfMA).

In July, the new Triton had been spotted road testing in Europe, said AfMA.

Noting company officials had acknowledged in 2021 electrification plans for next-generation Tritons, no official news has been announced, said AfMA. The new Triton is expected to feature either a trimotor or quad-motor powertrain setup.

The AfMA reported details of the 2023 Triton’s design. “The 2023 model is expected to adopt Mitsubishi’s current front-end design language. Dubbed as the Dynamic Shield front design, it will feature newly designed split headlamps with the upper half consisting of DRL and turn indicator and the bottom half is expected to include low beam and high beam lights.”

The pickup is expected to have a single-piece radiator grill with three tube-shaped horizontal openings, a honeycomb grid, and radar for driver assistance systems. The sides will likely have new alloy wheels and a squarer wheel arch. Meanwhile, the rear will likely have new tail lamps and an updated bumper.
