Mapillary has begun offering delivery fleets a dashcam and video telematics platform that gathers mapping data during a driver's route to provide drivers with the most accurate route on future deliveries, according to the company.
The camera captures images that are uploaded to a cloud platform that uses computer vision artificial intelligence to extract map data of traffic signs, road markings, and other data that can be used to improve the maps drivers use for deliveries. Mapillary sources its hardware from Pittasoft, which is known for its line of BlackVue dashcams.
"Broken maps are a big problem for many reasons," said Mapillary CEO Jan Erik Solem. "To most people, it's annoying when an incorrect map means that you can’t find the place you’re going to, but for logistics companies under tight deadlines, this can have a big impact on how many deliveries they are able to make that day and eventually on their bottom line financial results."
Leading logistics firms face mounting pressure to deliver more goods faster. Earlier this year, Amazon announced one-day shipping to all Prime customers in North America. The company spent $28 billion on shipping in 2018.
In September, Walmart announced it would offer unlimited grocery deliveries throughout the U.S. Meanwhile, 84% of shoppers say they're unlikely to return to a retailer after one negative shipping experience, according to research from a logistics shipping researcher.
Mapillary is based in Malmo, Sweden, and maintains satellite offices in New York City and Graz, Austria. Mapillary personnel work in 16 countries.
